Medical Spanish: dialogue 68 (Olegario has back pain.)
Olegario: Doctor, tengo una semana con dolor intenso en la espalda y la pierna derecha, que me hace difícil caminar.
(Doctor, I have a week of intense back and right leg pain, which makes it difficult to walk.)
Doctor: ¿Y ese dolor es algo nuevo? ¿A qué se refiere con dificultad para caminar?
(And is that pain something new? What do you mean by difficulty walking?) Note: Literally, it says, "to what does it refer itself..."
Olegario: El dolor de espalda lo tengo desde hace dos meses, cuando empecé a trabajar en construcción, pero desde hace una semana me duele la pierna derecha, y ocasionalmente siento hormigueo y debilidad.
(I have the back pain since two months ago, when I began to work in constuction, but since a week ago, my right leg hurts, and occasionally I feel tingling and weakness.) Note: The word "hormigueo" is easy to remember if you know that "hormiga" means "ant."
Doctor: ¿La debilidad es cómo si la pierna no pudiera sostenerle?
(The weakness is as if the leg could not hold you up?)
Olegario: Sí, exacto. Estoy caminando y de repente es como que la pierna no responde.
(Yes, exactly. I am walking and suddenly it is like the leg does not respond.)
Doctor: ¿Exactamente dónde es el dolor?
(Exactly where is the pain?)
Olegario: El dolor empieza aquí cerca de la cintura. Se siente como calor y ardor en la zona.
(The pain begins here near the waist. It feels like heat and burning in the area.)
Doctor: ¿Y siempre está localizado allí?
(And is it always localized there?)
Olegario: No doctor. Se riega por detrás de la pierna. Al principio se calmaba con anti-inflamatorios, pero ahora es constante, y no puedo dormir.
(No doctor. It spreads behind the leg. At first it calmed down with anti-infammatories, but now it is constant, and I cannot sleep.) Note: "Riega" is from the verb "regar," which technically means "to water" or "to irrigate," but less commonly can mean "scatter" or "spread."
Doctor: ¿Hay dolor si presiono aquí a los lados de las vértebras? Acuéstese aquí boca arriba para examinarle. Por favor extienda las piernas.
(Is there pain if I press here at the sides of the vertebrae? Lie down here on your back to be examined. Please extend the legs.) Note: Observe that to say "lie on your back," you say "mouth up (boca arriba)", and to say "lie on your stomach," you say "mouth down (boca abajo)."
Olegario: Sí doctor, eso me duele.
(Yes doctor, that hurts.)
Doctor: Voy a levantarle la pierna lentamente. Mantenga la pierna extendida sin flexionar.
(I am going to slowly lift your leg. Maintain the leg extended without flexing.)
Olegario: Eso me duele, y me duele mucho más cuando trato de recoger algo del suelo.
(That hurts, and it hurts a lot more when I try to pick up something from the floor.)
Doctor: Eso significa que probablemente hay un problema en la médula espinal, o una inflamación que puede estar afectando al nervio ciático de la pierna.
(That means that probably there is a problem in the spinal cord, or an inflammation that can be affecting the sciatic nerve of the leg.)
Olegario: ¿Y puede mejorarse?
(And can it get better?)
Doctor: Generalmente sí. Primero debemos hacerle estudios para determinar si el problema es en la médula o en el nervio. Le voy a pedir una imagen por resonancia magnética.
(Generally yes. First we must perform studies to determine if the problem is in the cord or in the nerve. I am going to request an image by MRI.)
Olegario: ¿Y el tratamiento entonces va a ser diferente dependiendo del sitio afectado?
(And the treatment then is going to be different depending on the affected site?)
Doctor: Sí. Básicamente reposo, fisioterapia, y medicamentos en conjunto pueden controlar la enfermedad. Si hay una lesión que afecta la médula, como una hernia discal, entonces puede necesitar tratamiento quirúrgico.
(Yes. Basically rest, physical therapy, and medications in combination can control the illness. If there is a lesion that affects the cord, like a herniated disc, then it may need surgical treatment.) Note: Observe that in the sentence above, "hernia" is the noun, and "discal" is the adjective.
