Spanish grammar lesson 12: "preguntar" vs. "pedir"
Which word means "to ask," and which word means "to request?"
Exercise: Read carefully, listen to, and repeat aloud the following examples.
Preguntar
- To ask (because you want to know something)
Debo preguntar cuándo es la cita.
(I must ask when is the appointment.)
Pregúntale al señor dónde está la oficina de terapia física.
(Ask the gentleman where is the office of physical therapy.)
María le preguntó a su papá si puede ir con nosotros.
(Maria asked her father if she can go with us.)
- To wonder, or ask oneself ("preguntarse")
Me pregunto si estos síntomas van a mejorar.
(I wonder if these symptoms will improve.)
- To inquire, ask (used with "por")
Ellos preguntaron por tí ayer.
(They asked about you yesterday.)
Preguntan por el jefe en el teléfono.
(They are asking for the boss on the telephone.)
Pedir
- To request or ask for something
Ella pidió ayuda a la enfermera.
(She requested help from the nurse.)
Pedimos perdón por el retraso.
(We ask for forgiveness for the delay.)
Ellos pidieron una copia de los datos de registro.
(They requested a copy of the registration information.)
Él pide una oportunidad para trabajar en el laboratorio.
(He requests an opportunity to work in the laboratory.)
- To order something
En ese restaurante pedí un pescado que estuvo delicioso.
(In that restaurant I ordered fish that was delicious.)
- To borrow ("pedir prestado")
Espera, voy a pedir un bolígrafo prestado.
(Wait, I am going to borrow a pen.)
