Dayana huele a gasolina.

Medical Spanish: dialogue 70 (Dayana smells like gasoline.)

toxic ingestion - ingestión toxica

Papá: ¡Por favor ayúdennos! ¡La niña se nos muere! ¡No está respirando bien, y no se despierta!

(Please help us! The girl is dying! She is not breathing well, and does not wake up!) Note: In the second sentence, if the indirect object "nos" had been translated, it would read, "she is dying to us."

Doctora: Está muy caliente. Parece tener fiebre. ¿Cuánto hace que respira de esta manera? ¿A qué huele?

(She is very hot. She seems to have a fever. For how long has she been breathing like this? What is that smell? [Literally, "Of what does she smell?"]) Note: Literally, this would read, "How much does it make that she breathes in this manner?" Also, observe that when used with the verb "oler," "a" is translated as "of" or "like."

Mamá: ¡Creemos que tomó gasolina doctora, y vomitó un poco, pero no sabemos hace cuánto tiempo!

(We believe that she drank gasoline, doctor, and threw up a little, but we don't know how long ago!)

Papá: Yo estaba reparando mi carro, y dejé gasolina en un envase de refresco. Parece que la niña se lo tomó, porque encontré el frasco vacío, y ella huele a gasolina.

(I was repairing my car, and I left gasoline in a soda container. It seems that the girl drank it, because I found the bottle empty, and she smells like gasoline.)

Doctora: Enfermera, prepáreme un tubo endotraqueal y oxígeno. Tiene compromiso respiratorio. Póngale una hidratación y llame al departamento de toxicología.

(Nurse, prepare for me an endotracheal tube and oxygen. She is in respiratory distress. Place an IV for hydration, and call the department of toxicology.) Note: Literally, this reads, "She has respiratory compromise. Put to her a hydration..."

Mamá: ¿Qué le va a pasar doctora?

(What is going to happen to her, doctor?)

Doctora: Tenemos que ver cómo están los pulmones. Le pediremos radiografías, y este tubo la ayudará a respirar.

(We have to see how the lungs are. We will request x-rays, and this tube will help her to breathe.)

Papá: ¿Pero mi hija se va a recuperar?

(But is my daughter going to recuperate?)

Doctora: Generalmente este tipo de sustancia causa inicialmente daño respiratorio. También le haremos un electrocardiograma para descartar daño cardíaco.

(Generally, this type of substance initially causes respiratory damage. Also, we will do an electrocardiogram to rule out cardiac injury.)

Papá: ¿Es tan grave, doctora? ¿Va a morir?

(Is it really bad [so grave], doctor? Is she going to die?)

Doctora: Es demasiado pronto para saber cuál será el desenlace. Llamaré a terapia intensiva. Allí deberá estar en constante monitorización, hasta tener un mejor pronóstico de su condición.

(It is too soon to know what the outcome will be. I will call over to intensive care. She must be there, in constant monitoring, until we have a better prognosis of her condition.) Note: Observe that "hasta" plus an infinitive is translated as "until" plus a conjugated form of the verb.
