Papá: Doctor, deseo que evalúe a mi hijo por favor. Hoy se desmayó mientras practicaba deportes en la escuela.
(Doctor, I wish that you evaluate my son please. Today he fainted while he was practicing sports in the school.)
David: Papá...Eso fue sólo un desmayo.
(Papa...That was only a faint.)
Doctor: A ver, ¿has tenido eso otras veces David?
(Let's see, have you had that other times, David?) Note: Literally, "a ver" means "at to see," and is translated idiomatically.
Papá: El entrenador me dijo que otras veces se ha quejado de mareos y de tener el corazón latiendo más rápido.
(The coach told me that other times he has complained of dizziness and of having the heart beating more rapidly.)
David: Bueno, pero ayer fue la primera vez que me desmayé. Otras veces, he tenido el corazón repentinamente acelerado, y a veces mareos, pero luego estos han desaparecido espontáneamente.
(Well, but yesterday was the first time that I fainted. Other times, I have had the heart suddenly accelerated, and at times dizziness, but later these have disappeared spontaneously.)
Doctor: En este momento, el pulso, la presión arterial, y la respiración, están bien. ¿Alguna vez, antes de ayer, sentiste que te ibas a desmayar, o algún otro síntoma?
(In this moment, the pulse, the arterial pressure, and the breathing, are good. Any time, before yesterday, did you feel that you were going to faint, or some other symptom?)
David: Sí, en dos o tres ocasiones, he sentido que me iba desmayar, y una vez sentí que no podía respirar bien durante las palpitaciones.
(Yes, in two or three occasions I have felt that I was going to faint, and one time I felt that I could not breathe well during the palpitations.)
Doctor: Voy a pedirle un electrocardiograma y una radiografía del tórax. Quiero descartar algún problema cardíaco.
(I am going to order an electrocardiogram and a radiograph of the thorax. I want to rule out any cardiac problem.)
Papá: ¿Pero no es muy joven para tener algo del corazón, doctor?
(But isn't he very young to have something of the heart, doctor?)
Doctor: No. Algunos pacientes que presentan estos síntomas, pueden tener una enfermedad conocida como síndrome de Wolff-Parkinson-White, en la cual el corazón empieza a latir desordenadamente.
(No. Some patients who present these symptoms can have an illness known as syndrome of Wolff-Parkinson-White, in which the heart begins to beat in a disorderly way.)
David: ¿Y eso es peligroso?
(And that is dangerous?)
Doctor: Esta condición podría provocarte muerte súbita, aún cuando tú todavía eres muy joven. Así que, debemos estar seguros del diagnóstico para darte el tratamiento adecuado.
(This condition could provoke to you sudden death, even when you still are very young. Therefore, we must be sure of the diagnosis to give you adequate treatment.) Note: Observe that the expression "así que" is idiomatically translated as "therefore" in this situation. In other situations it can be translated literally as "so that."
