39. Margarita está muy pálida. (Margarita is very pallid.)
Papá: Doctora, mi hija está muy pálida. Se cansa con poco esfuerzo. Casi no quiere caminar porque dice que le duelen los huesos, y cuando se golpea, le salen morados con mucha facilidad.
(Doctor, my daughter is very pallid. She becomes tired with little effort. She hardly wants to walk because she says that the bones hurt her, and when she bumps herself, bruises appear easily.) Note: Literally, it says, "with much ease."
Doctora: Entiendo. ¿Ha notado alguna otra cosa inusual?
(I understand. Have you noticed any other unusual thing?)
Papá: La maestra del kindergarten me dijo que por primera vez, hace dos días, le sangró la nariz, y hoy las encías le sangraron cuando se cepilló los dientes.
(The teacher of the kindergarten told me that for the first time, two days ago, her nose bled, and today the gums bled when she brushed the teeth.)
Doctora: En este momento tiene fiebre de 103, y encuentro que tiene el hígado y el bazo, un poco grandes.
(In this moment she has fever of 103, and I find that she has the liver and the spleen a bit large.)
Papá: ¿Usted cree que esto tenga que ver con los otros síntomas?
(Do you believe that this has to do with the other symptoms?) Note: In Spanish "tener que ver con," or "to have to see with," is equivalent to the English expression "to have to do with."
Doctora: Todo esto sugiere que hay un desequilibrio en las células de su sangre. Voy a pedirle una hematología completa.
(All this suggests that there is a unbalance in the cells of her blood. I am going to request a complete blood count.)
Papá: Mientras esperamos los resultados, voy a llamar a la escuela, para que sepan que tengo a la niña aquí en el hospital.
(While we await the results, I am going to call the school, so they know that I have the girl here in the hospital.) Note: "Sepan" is the present subjunctive tense of the verb "saber."
Doctora: Señor, parece que Margarita tiene leucemia. Los glóbulos blancos están en 50,000. Tendremos que hacerle una biopsia de la médula ósea, para saber exactamente de qué tipo es.
(Sir, it seems that Margarita has leukemia. The white blood cells are at 50,000. We will have to do a biopsy of the bone marrow, to know exactly what type it is.)
Papá: ¡Ay, doctora! ¿Se va a salvar?
(Ay, doctor! Is she going to be saved?) Note: Literally, it says "Is she going to save herself?"
Doctora: Una vez que tengamos el resultado, podremos dar el tratamiento apropiado, y estimar las probabilidades de supervivencia. Por favor, siéntese aquí. Necesitamos hablar más.
(Once that we have the result, we will be able to give appropriate treatment, and estimate the probablities of survival. Please sit down here. We need to talk more.)
